Our Lovely Teacher for This Course
I have been sewing from a young age. For the last 20 years I have worked in fabric retail, and have been teaching patchwork and quilting to beginners and experienced sewers. I relax by sewing quilts, and love to make personalised quilts for significant events for my family and friends.
The 4 week course will cover making a square block quilt using 2 fabrics using techniques that you can use to make other quilts in the future using different colour fabrics and patterns.
Learn how to use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler to cut accurately.
Cut pieces for quilt.
Preparation for quilting-pinning the layers, avoiding wrinkles. Quilting on the machine.
Set up sewing machine for piecing. Learn how to stitch pieces together, including individual patches, chain piecing, accurate seams, matching seams.
Binding the quilt Learn how to achieve a professional finish to your work.
If there are any items you don’t have already, let me know and I can help source them for you. Some items like needles and scissors I will have on hand but others I may need to order in like feet for machines etc.
Two fabrics that contrast are needed for this quilt. Please use pure cotton fabrics, pre washed and ironed.
Fabric 1. 1.6m with a large pattern. This includes the large squares so needs something interesting
Fabric 2. 1.0m with small pattern or solid colour.
Backing 1.9m
Batting 1.3m cotton or poly/cotton mix or bamboo batting are suitable (I’m going to look at ordering a bulk lot of backing for those who need so we can hopefully get a bulk discount so let me know if you would like to be part of this)
Thread. Choose one to blend with fabrics for piecing. A colour to be used for quilting will be chosen later.
You will have made a quilt that looks something like this (but in your own choice of colours of course):
Here are a couple more examples of the quilt style we will me making during the course, the black and white coloured one (above) is the one we will be making and the other pictures are examples of other ways you can use this style of quilting using the skills you’ll learn during the course.
